Des Moines, IA -- Evelyn Joyce Stecher, 81, passed from this life on Friday, October 19, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 25, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Cremation will follow services and a memorial graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Resthaven Cemetery.

Evelyn was born on February 7, 1931, in Ames, Iowa to Marion A. and Ada P. (Tilley) Kuhn. She graduated from Clarion High School in 1948. Evelyn married John W. Stecher on February 18, 1950, in Clarion, Iowa. They made their home in Des Moines in 1963 where they raised their three children. Evelyn worked at Sears for 17 years retiring as a customer service manager in 1986. She did volunteer work for various organizations including, Mercy Hospital, Mercy Hospice, Amanda the Panda, Blood Center of Iowa, and the Northwest Senior Center. Evelyn was a member of the Red Hat Society, Bishop Drumm quilting group, DAR and DAC.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 62 years, John, her children, Becky (Hugh) Smart of Cincinnati, OH, Linda (David) McKelvie of Littleton, CO and David Stecher of Urbandale; five grandchildren, Daniel and Matthew Smart, Shannon McKelvie, Riley and Kelsey Stecher; and her brother Marvin (Betty) Kuhn of New Bloomfield, MO. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sybil Dangelser.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice.
