VINTON, IA -- Willis Duane Hansen, 78, of 5769 28th Avenue, Vinton, Iowa, died at Western Home Communities Martin Health Center, on Monday, October 1, 2012.

Willis was born July 7, 1934, in Goldfield, Iowa, the son of Gilbert LeRoy Sr. and Beatrice Ione (Lister) Hansen. Willis attended grade school in Lenox, IA, and graduated from Vinton Lincoln High School in 1952. Willis was in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, WA. He then served in the Army National Guard from 1958 to 1960, and reserves from 1960 to 1962. He was a Specialist, 4th class (E-4). On September 4, 1955, Willis was united in marriage with Charlene “Susie” Wilson, his high school sweetheart, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church. They were married for 57 years. Willis was an active member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, and has served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher and Lay Preacher. Willis served as the Office Manager of the USDA (ASCS) of Benton County from 1960 through 1985. He enjoyed working with and helping the farmers. He was a farmer as well as a self-employed contractor and carpenter. He enjoyed life and loved nature, bird watching, gardening, wood-working, spending time with family and friends and traveling.

Willis is survived by his wife, a son, Kris (Sue) Hansen of Cedar Falls, a grandson, Josh (Stacy) Hansen of Janesville, a granddaughter, Sara (Mike Moreland) Hansen of Cedar Falls, great-granddaughters, Alayna and Westin Hansen, of Cedar Falls, two brothers, Gilbert Jr. (Rose) Hansen of Vinton and Keith (Barb) Hansen of Hampton, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration Of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Vinton Presbyterian Church, 608 First Street, Vinton, with Reverend Charles Orr officiating. Visitation will also be held at the church in the fellowship hall from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorial funds have been established at Vinton Presbyterian Church, at 608 1st Street, Vinton, IA,52349, and Western Home Communities, 420 E. 11th Street, Cedar Falls, IA 50613. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
