February 19, 1924 -- March 1, 2003

J. H. Arden "Toby" Thompson, the son of Henry Bertenius and Ellen Severina (Johnson) Thompson, was born on February 19, 1924, in Eagle Grove Township, Iowa. Raised and educated in the area of his birth, he graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1942. Toby was united in marriage to Miriam G. Comstock on June 21, 1943, at the Congregational Church in Clarion. When first married, they lived in Eagle Grove and Toby worked on the railroad for four years before moving to the family farm west of Eagle Grove in 1949. While farming, Toby also sold Pioneer corn for 23 years. They moved back into town upon Toby's retirement in 1991.

Toby was a lifelong member of Samuel Lutheran Church. He attended Derscheid Country School when growing up on the farm and years later served as the Director of the school. Toby served as a 4-H Leader and was a member and President of the Wright County Fair Board for many years. He was active with fitting, showing and judging cattle for his children and many other kids who wanted to learn. Known to many as a good friend and neighbor, Toby's Norwegian jokes and giving personality were lifelong characteristics that will be fondly remembered.

Survivors include his four children and their spouses: Kathy and Roger Gunderson of Danville, California, Scott and Rhonda Thompson of Eagle Grove, Nora Ann Paukert of Danville, California, and Barb and Tim Dooley of Eagle Grove; 7 grandchildren: Eric and Kari Gunderson, Erin and Leah Paukert, Beth, Drew and Ben Dooley; sister-in-laws, Phyllis Comstock of Eagle Grove and Phyllis and Dr. Richard Kist of Clinton and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Thompson passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge at the age of 79 years. Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Miriam in September of 2000; sister, Burnette Thompson and brother-in-law, Robert Comstock.
