Former Clarionite Dies at Nevada
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Vera L. Backous, Tuesday, May 9, 1967 at 10:30 a. m. at the Cooper Funeral Home and at 2:00 p. m. at the Salem E. U. B. Church, Rev. Dale Ellsworth and Rev. Rudolpf Trusheim officiated. Pall bearers were Andy Lester, Paul Loomis, Darrell Wilson, Dean Wilson, Merle Wilson and Frank Lester. Interment was in the Harlan cemetery at Dumont, Iowa. The Cooper Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
Vera L. Backous was born on January 22, 1903 at Clarion, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frank and Louvelva (Benedict) Thompson. She passed away suddenly of a heart attack at Nevada, Iowa on Sunday, May 7, 1967 at the age of 64 years. She grew up in the Clarion community and received her education in the Clarion school. On September 10, 1920 she was united in marriage to Leonard Lester. The couple made their home on a farm near Clarion. Later they moved to Rowan, Iowa. To this union four sons were born: Leonard Lester Jr., who passed away on August 5, 1958; Elgin of Dumont, Iowa; Donald of Greene, Iowa; and Jay of Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Those who preceded her in death were her husband, Leonard Lester, who passed away on February 7, 1958; her parents; and a son, Leonard. On December 28, 1960 she was united in marriage to Sam Backous. They made their home at Maxwell, Iowa since 1961. Surviving are her husband, Sam of Maxwell; the three sons; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Wilson of Hackensack, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
