Blairsburg Farmer Dies as Tile Ditch Caves In on Him

Amos H. Barrick, 54, widely known Blairsburg farmer, was killed late Saturday afternoon [May 22, 1954] when a tile ditch caved in on him, burying all but his head and upper chest. His death was attributed to suffocation, and it took about half an hour to free him from the cave-in area which was about 12 feet deep. Two son were with him at the time, helping replace tile on the Barrick farm in Wright county, seven and one-half miles north of Blairsburg. services are pending until word is received from a son, Staff Sgt. Duane Barrick, stationed in Turkey.

Amos Harry Barrick, son of Addison and Annie Barrick, was born May 8, 1900, on a farm near Carlisle, Pa. He was reared and educated in that vicinity. He was 16 years old when he came to Iowa, being employed on several farms in Hamilton county. He was united in marriage Oct. 23, 1925 to Sylvia Berniece Ayers. The couple started housekeeping on a farm two and one-half miles northeast of Blairsburg. They resided there for nine years, and with the exception of one year when they lived in Webster City, he had since resided on a farm seven and one-half miles north of Blairsburg, in Wright county. Mrs. Barrick died January 4, 1950. March 20, 1950 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Jessie Whaley Burr, and they had since made their home on the farm north of Blairsburg.

He is survived by his wife, six sons and one daughter: Harry and Ray of Blairsburg; Staff Sgt. Duane; Pfc. Charles at Camp McCoy, Wis., Francis, Jerry and Betty, all of Blairsburg; one step son and one step daughter, Wesley Burr of Blairsburg and Iva Del Burr of Des Moines. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Eugene, Wayne and Janet Barrick; three brothers and four sisters surviving: Ira of Sheffield, Clarence of Renwick and John of Newville, Pa, Mrs. Florence Meyne of Greene, Iowa; Mrs. Gertie Tritt of Carlisle, Pa.; Mrs. Nora Yohe of Newville, Pa, Mrs. ... He was preceded in death by one daughter, who died in infancy, and by his parents. A kind and loving father and husband, he was widely known in the Blairsburg community as a friendly, helpful neighbor.
