FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY FOR SPENCER SMITH

Funeral services for Spencer B. Smith were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Congregational church with Rev. Emmett Braselton officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Smith died Thursday afternoon, January 11th in Eldora following a sudden heart attack. He was there on business for Farmland Industries, his employer.

He is survived by his wife, Gerene, two sons and a daughter: William and Beverly and Stuart. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. W. L. Christensen of Eagle Grove and one brother Ellwyn of Norwalk.

He has been employed by Farmland Industries since 1961. Mr. Smith was born in Eagle Grove and attended the Eagle Grove Schools and Junior College and also attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He played professional baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and then entered the army and served during World War II in Germany. He returned home after the war and served as deputy Wright County Sheriff. He later started farming and farmed in Troy Township from 1947 to 1961, when he moved to Eagle Grove. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, a past master of the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the American Legion.

Funeral services for Spencer B. Smith, 49, Eagle Grove, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Emmett Braselton officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Sandvig Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith died suddenly Thursday of a heart attack in Eldora while he was there on business for Farmland Industries, his employer.

Survivors include his wife, a twin daughter and son, Beverly and William, 17, and a son, Stewart, 7, at home, and a sister and brother, Mrs. W. L. Christensen, Eagle Grove, and Ellwyn Smith, Norwalk.

Born at Eagle Grove, Mr. Smith was a graduate of Eagle Grove High School, Junior College, the University of Iowa, and was a professional baseball player with Montreal, a Brooklyn Dodger farm team. He entered the Army during World War II and served in Germany. After discharge he was deputy sheriff in Wright County for several years. He then farmed west of Eagle Grove until 1961 when he moved to Eagle Grove. He began employment with Farmland Industries in November 1961. He married Gerene Dougherty at Clarion in 1948. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Congregational Church, a past master of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the American Legion.
