Roger Paul Caton, 83, of Florence, S.D., and recently of Lake Havasu City, died peacefully Jan. 14, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, S.D. He was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Matthew Caton and Mable (German) Caton. He grew up in Iowa Falls where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1947. He married Joanne Lowery July 8, 1950, in Popejoy, Iowa. They made their home there for approximately a year while Roger worked with his father doing carpentry. In 1951, they moved to Des Moines, Iowa where he worked for Wonder Bread before taking a position with General Motors. It was at this time he moved his family to a small farm in Indianola, Iowa. He continued to work at General Motors during the week and worked on his farm in his spare time. In 1968, he was transferred to Minneapolis, Minn., with General Motors. During this time he moved his family to Prior Lake, Minn., before moving to Northfield, Minn., where they lived until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement he moved to Webster, S.D., and worked for his son-in-law’s John Deere Implement for approximately one year. They moved to Lake Havasu City in 1983, and resided there until his wife’s passing in December 2008. In July 2009, he moved back to South Dakota and resided at the Countryview Assisted Living in Florence until his death Jan. 14.

Survivors include two sons, Steven (Susan) Caton, of Northfield, Minn., Douglas Caton, of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Linda (Terry) Sampson, of Watertown, S.D., and Rebecca (Jon) Nordstrom, of Shakopee, Minn.; one sister, Janice Caton Good, of Waterloo, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joanne, and a grandson, Timothy Carel.
