Maurice John Olson was born December 31, 1920 in Humboldt County the son of Otto and Agnes Emrud Olson. He was educated in a rural school and graduated from the Thor Public School in 1938.
He was united in marriage to Freda Nichols of Eagle Grove on May 23, 1942, at Bethany, Missouri. He farmed for a time, then entered the U.S. Army Air Force, January 2, 1943 and served until November 16, 1945. Upon returning home, he farmed and worked for A & A Motors in Thor until becoming employed by Cornbelt Power of Humboldt as a shift manager. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the Ullensvang Lutheran Church, Thor; a member of the American Legion Post at Livermore; and longtime member of the Thor Fire Department until 1981, and served as fire chief for a number of years. Maurice J. Olson entered the Hamilton County Hospital, Webster City, for treatment for cancer. He died there on Sunday, March 8, 1992, at the age of 71 years, two months, and 23 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, who died in 1991. He is survived by three sons, Maurice Jr., Thor; Ronald, Mission Hills, California; and Dean, Humboldt; four daughters, Mrs. Henry (Shirley) Vinnece, Laurel, Maryland; Mrs. Warren (Joyce) Ruberg, Thor; Mrs. Richard (La Donna) Van Gorp, Thor; and Mrs. Mark (Maurene) Tokheim, Thor; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Arden (Irene) Berhow, Eagle Grove.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 12 at the Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor, with the Rev. H.W. Schiller officiating at the 2 pm service. Burial was in the West Ullensvang Cemetery, Thor. Kaster-Babcock Services of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
