April 18, 1915 --- June 19, 2012

BELMOND, IA - Velma Letha Frohling, 97, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 25, at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond with services to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Belmond Cemetery. Velma was born on April 18, 1915, in Wright County, Iowa, to Stuart L. and Rose (Hilpipre) Smith. She grew up near Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1935. On Aug. 30, 1937, she married Edward Frohling in Des Moines. The couple resided in Belmond all their married life. She worked at the Belmond Community Hospital for 30-plus years. In her retirement she painted china, including many dolls which she lovingly outfitted. She also enjoyed traveling, crocheting, sewing and tending her flower garden. She was a long-time active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond. Survivors include her sons: Arlyn (Diane) of Bradenton, Fla., Verlyn (Barb) of Story City and Jerry (Alice) of Stockton, Calif.; eight grandchildren: Sherri Keigan, Jean Kailiawa, Bill Frohling, Ed Frohling, Dave Frohling, Kris Frohling, Letha Simard, Roger Frohling; and 11 great-grandchildren.
