Harry "Jug" Slining Jr., 83, of Babbitt dies

Harry "Jug" Slining Jr., 83, of Babbitt, went to the Lord on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at St. Michael's in Virginia, MN with friends and family beside him. He was born May 23, 1929 to Harry and Eunice (Reed) Slining Sr. in Belmond, Iowa where he was raised with eight siblings. On June 11, 1949 he married Marlene Schulte of Alexander, Iowa. In 1952 the couple moved to Austin MN and then to Babbitt on February 6, 1956. In Babbitt he worked at Reserve Mining Company where he started as a welder and worked his way up to foreman until retirement. Jug was not only a big part in the early stages of Reserve, he was also a refrigeration repair man and worked several places around Babbitt. The couple owned and operated the Country Club Restaurant for 10 years. Jug was active in the community and on several committees including the Lions club, the Conservation Club, Peter Mitchell Fun Days and Reserve Mining Company Reunion. Jug was a "jack" of all trades and lent a helping hand to his community wherever possible.

Jug and Marlene were Grand Marshals of the parade about 13 years ago. Last year he was Mr. Peter Mitchell and was proud of the honor. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, where he was very active up until the last year. Jug was battling with health problems the last few years of his life. Jug has now joined his wife Marlene who passed away six years ago who has been waiting patiently on the old Country Club's Bar. Jug and Marlene were married 56 years.

Jug is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son James, and one granddaughter. Jug has left behind two sisters, Joann and Janet. Jug is survived by his son Terry, and daughter Roberta "Bobbie" who still reside at the Country Club. His four grandchildren Robin, Toni, Bobby, and Emily Rose as well as his great grandchildren Jesse, Tara, Jacob, Brady, and Madison as well as all his other family and friends will miss him dearly.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Babbitt with at 2:30 p.m. Pastor John Bonk will officiate. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home.
