Just as the day was drawing to a close so was the life of one of our well known and highly respected citizens, Mrs. Helen Walker, for on January 5, 1968 at the Heritage Home in Clarion she died.

Helen Dorthea Ehlerding was born near Waverly, Iowa September 15, 1882. She was the daughter of Frederick William and Mary Ellen Ehlerding. Helen was one of twelve children in this family. The only one now surviving her is a sister Mrs I. B. Nail of Benton, Kentucky. The Ehlerding family moved from Waverly to Waterloo, Iowa and in 1894 moved to Fordland, Missouri. In 1902 Helen went to Fort Dodge, Iowa to make her home with her brother Will and his family. She later came to Clarion in 1907 and was associated with Mrs. Koontz in the millinery business located then in the north part of Main Street.

Helen Ehlerding on March 11, 1909 was united in marriage with Herbert P. Walker at Fort Dodge and they made their home in Clarion. A son, Edmund Frank was born to this union on June 23, 1910. While the family resided in Clarion at that time her husband was a partner of George Linebarger in the wall paper and paint business. Later this family moved to Omaha Nebraska where Herbert entered Creighton University Medical College and was graduated in 1915 and engaged in his first medical practice at Albion, Nebraska. When Dr. Walker joined the Army Medical service in 1917 Helen and son returned to Clarion and resided with Mr. and Mrs. William E. Walker at 220 Central Avenue East for the duration of World War I.

On May 3, 1921 Herbert P. Jr. was born. In 1919 Dr. Walker formed a partnership with Dr. E. D. Tompkins of Clarion which continued to 1947 after which Dr. Walker continued in practice until his retirement. After her husband's death on August 20, 1960 Mrs. Walker continued to reside at their home at 215 First Avenue N. E. until failing health made it necessary for her to enter the Heritage Nursing Home in April 1966. Mrs. Walker was a great lover of flowers particularly the early spring and the wild ones Every little flower and plant she nurtured and attended as if it were a gift from heaven Her companionship was greatly appreciated by her friends who always found her willing to do all she could for a worthy cause. She was a member of the Congregational church and its Women's Fellowship. She was a fifty-year member of Adah Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and also a member of the American Legion the Navy Mothers and the Amiga Circle.

The deceased is survived by her son Dr. E. Frank Walker and his wife, Charlotte and one grandson Cedric F. Walker of Los Angeles, California and by her son Herbert P. Walker Jr. and wife Ann of Yelm, Washington and by her sister-in-law Mrs. Katherine W. Magner of Clarion and by several nieces and nephews.
