DEMING, N.M. - Larry Lee Castleman, 71, a former Oelwein resident and 1958 graduate of Oelwein High School, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2012, of pancreatic cancer at Deming, New Mexico. Larry was born Oct. 15, 1940 in Clarion, Iowa, to Lester and Eva (Sackett) Castleman. He attended Clarion schools until moving to Oelwein in 1955. He married Nanette McComish of Port Richmond, Calif., on March 27, 1965. To this union a daughter Christy and son Tim were born. After graduation, Larry enlisted in the Air Force. After serving four years, he worked and attended college and received his Master's Degree in media and library science at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. He then began his career in Civil Service being a librarian on many military bases in Germany, Japan, Okinawa, Texas, Louisiana, California and New Mexico. His family was able to accompany him each time. After serving two assignments at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, the family decided that was where they wanted to retire. Larry was an avid reader, liked hiking with his family in the mountains, history, and crossword puzzles. He enjoyed his family and travels. He had a whole shelf of cookbooks and liked to cook, but he left the baking to his wife.
Larry is survived by his wife, Nanette, children Christy and Tim, and his sister Marj Cramer of Clarion, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Jesse and Tillie Castleman and Lloyd and Nora Sackett, and brother-in-law Don Cramer. The body was cremated with burial at a later date.
