NEW OXFORD, PA --- Inez G. Long, 94, educator and pastor's wife, formerly of Lancaster, passed away February 27, 2012, at The Brethren Home Community, New Oxford, where she lived since 1998. Born in Elkhart, Iowa, on November 19, 1917, to Earl and Mary (Mathis) Goughnour, Inez grew up in a family of teachers and preachers. She graduated from East Des Moines High School and in 1939 from Manchester (IN) College. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago, Catholic University, Yale Divinity School, Dayton Art Institute, Penn State University, and Millersville University. Baptized in the Brethren faith in 1926 and married in 1943, she had a rich life in the church with her pastor husband, the late John D. Long. Inez taught art 1939-40 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, was editor of the Church of the Brethren's youth magazine 1940-43, taught in New Haven, Conn., 1944-45, while her husband attended Yale Divinity School, and free-lanced for religious publications much of her life. She served on the Lancaster Human Relations Board, taught in the summer Upward Bound program at Franklin & Marshall College, was an adjunct instructor at York College of PA, and led poetry classes to retirees in "The Poets' Corner" at the Brethren Home Community. She taught English at McCaskey High School from 1963-1981 and found McCaskey to be "the perfect match" for her teaching. She founded and advised the school's literary magazine, Burning Glass. American, African-American, religious literature, and creative writing were her specialties. Many Millersville University student teachers were mentored by her during her career. She served as editor on the advisory board of the PA Department of Education for the high school text, Religious Literature of the West. In that connection, she traveled to India on a Fulbright summer program to study Hinduism in 1974. Her mission as a teacher was "to develop the mind, the greatest area of unemployment in the world." In 1970, she was among the nominees named Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Inez authored five books Faces Among the Faithful, Pastor and People, One Man's Peace, Lord's Day Morning and Exiles from Home, a novel. She and her husband served Church of the Brethren congregations in Dayton, Ohio, for 10 years (1945-1955), in Lancaster for 25 years (1955-1980), and in retirement, 10 interim pastorates in four states.
