Sterling was born on Nov. 25, 1931, in Webster City, to Henry and Erna (Davin) Meyer. He grew up with older brothers, Virgil and Clair. Sterling and his brothers enjoyed hunting, fishing and growing up on the farm. Sterling graduated from Clarion High School in 1950. On April 15, 1961, he was united in marriage to Juliana St. John in Eagle Grove. Sterling and Julie were the proud parents of five daughters - Loree, Kelley, Michele, Jill and Melisa. Sterling served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952, including a tour of duty in Korea. He was a proud member of the American Legion. After returning home, he continued his love of farming for 57 more years. In 1968, the Meyer family moved from Blairsburg to Thompson where he continued his farming career and raising a family.
Sterling was also a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed restoring everything from Mustangs to Corvettes. He relished going to and participating in many car shows. The Meyer family enjoyed almost 40 years at Beaver Lake, Minn., each summer learning to swim, ski and fish. 2011 was a special year for Sterling and the family as he and Julie celebrated 50 years of marriage. Turning 80 in November was another momentous occasion for Sterling. Having his whole family together during these times and sharing them with special friends was memorable.
