Steven Edward Lunning, 61, of Ames, passed away Friday morning, March 16, at Israel Family Hospice House. His wife, Cindy, dog, Sable, and niece, Holly, were with him as he peacefully left this earthly world. Steven was born Jan. 4, 1951, in Mason City, to Elwin I. Lunning and Delores K. (Trotman) Lunning. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1969, NIACC in Mason City in 1971 and University of Northern Iowa in 1975. On Aug. 30, 1975, he married Cynthia A. Maier, of Eagle Grove. They met while attending the University of Northern Iowa. They lived in Cedar Falls, Nevada and Ames. Steve worked for Collegiate Pacific, the city of Ames and Mary Greeley Medical Center, all in Ames. Steve was the payroll coordinator at MGMC for almost 25 years. He retired in January 2011. He was on the board of directors for the Ace Community Credit Union for more than 20 years. Steve enjoyed his work at MGMC and on the board at Ace Credit Union, as well as the people he met and worked with there. He was a member of the Central Iowa Chapter of the American Payroll Association. He liked being outdoors, playing golf, watching sports on his big screen TV (especially the Hawkeyes), cooking (especially desserts) and spending time with his dogs.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and his best friend for the past two years, his dog, Sable. He is also survived by one sister, Kathleen (Dennis) Oian, of LaPorte Texas, and their children, Eric (Shelia) Oian, Kurt Oian and Erin Oian, all of Texas. He also is survived by his mother-in-law, Wanda Maier, of Ames; sister-in-law Cathy (Al) Van Kley, of Ankeny; sister-in-law Chris (Kevin) Brooks, of Slater; brother-in-law Tom (Rhonda) Maier, of Nevada; niece and nephews, Holly Brooks, Ryan Brooks, Mitch (Emily) Van Kley, Tate Maier and Nate Maier. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elwin and Delores Lunning, of Mason City; one brother, Mark Lunning, of Mason City; his father-in-law, Richard Maier, of Ames; many aunts and uncles on both sides of the family, and by Steve and Cindy’s animal shelter dogs, Dumpling and Taffy.
Per his wishes, Steve will be cremated, with his ashes to be scattered at a later date. A celebration of his life is planned for family and friends at 2:30 p.m Saturday, March 31, at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., Ames. Those attending this celebration will be asked to share their favorite stories about Steve. Memorial funds may be directed to his wife, Cindy, for donations in Steve’s name to MGMC, the Israel Hospice House, and the Ames Animal Shelter.
