Helena Clareen (Tonderum) Schmalzried, 79, of Ames, died Sunday, Jan. 23, at Israel Family Hospice House. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Ames with the Rev. John Anderson officiating.

Clareen, the daughter of Carl and Helena (Christiansen) Tonderum was born July 6, 1925, in Ottosen. She was baptized into the Christian faith at St. Olaf Lutheran Church of Bode. She affirmed her Christian faith through the rite of confirmation Oct. 27, 1940, at First Lutheran Church in Dows. She received her education at the Maple Lawn school of Ottosen and graduated from Dows High School.

She married Robert Schmalzried of Ames June 22, 1947, at First Lutheran Church in Dows. She lived most of her married life in Ames, Iowa Falls and Hayward, Calif. She was a homemaker, devoting her time to her family and church. She was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church and the Homemaker's Club of rural Ames for a number of years.

She shared her life with her husband, Robert, for 36 years until his death, and after that with her six children, James and Norma Schmalzried of Ames, Charlene Grafil of Brentwood, Calif., Steven and Leslie Schmalzried of Winterset, David and Jennie Schmalzried of Nevada, Peggy and David Butler of Fremont, Calif., and Carl and Brenda Schmalzried of Nevada; and with her 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Clareen was 79 years, 6 months and 17 days old at the time of her death. Memorial contributions may be directed to Israel Family Hospice House. Stevens Memorial Chapel of Ames is assisting the family with arrangements.
