Eagle Grove (formerly of Algona) -- Valerian Regina Hartl, 81, of Eagle Grove (formerly of Burt), died Friday, Nov. 15 (2002), at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 18 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, with the Revs. Paul and Susan Stone officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.

Valerian Regina was born Aug. 17, 1921, the daughter of Herman and Marcella Stufflick Erdman. She was baptized in the St. Benedict Catholic Church. She attended the St. Benedict Parochial School. On Nov. 12, 1939, she was united in marriage to John Hartl in Burt. They joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church, into which they were confirmed.

Valerian is survived by her daughter, Lavon (and Alan) Gray of Blue Grass; son, Raymond (and Virginia) Hartl of Waterford; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Erickson of Algona, and Josephine Hentges of Joy, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John, on April 18, 1982; two sisters, Leona Romer and Malinda Jennings; and three brothers, Jerome, Arthur and Magnus Erdman. Memorials may be directed to the Evangelical Lutheran Church Elevator Fund.
