HUMBOLDT, IA - Doris E. Ernst, 85, of Humboldt, passed away November 15, 2011 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Walden Paige officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.

Mrs. Ernst is survived by her husband, Eugene Ernst of Humboldt; her children, Sandra (Don) Ferneau of Ogden, Dennis (Mary Ann) Ernst of Humboldt, Diane (Jeffrey) Tordoff of Chariton, and Julie (Dan) Plahn of Ogden; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; her sister, Alice Hill of Humboldt; and her brothers, LeRoy Babcock of Eagle Grove and Melvin "Bub" Babcock of Fort Dodge. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marie Brauman, Mildred "Billie" Babcock, Minnie Mae Johnson, and Millie Iehl; infant sister, Beverly Babcock; and brother, Marvin Babcock.

Doris Elizabeth Babcock, the daughter of George and Mahala (Gatliff) Babcock, was born January 3, 1926 at Eagle Grove, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from Eagle Grove High School. She was united in marriage to Eugene Ernst on March 4, 1947 at Humboldt. The couple made their home on a farm near Hardy where Doris took pride in her job as homemaker and raising her children. On March 1, 1976, Gene and Doris moved to Humboldt.

Doris was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church where she was active in UMW. She enjoyed her participation in TOPS on Monday nights and Tuesday lunch with her friends. She enjoyed ceramics, and was a member of Women's Club, the Humboldt County Historical Society, Sewing Club, and the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She and Gene also looked forward to their card and supper clubs. Above all, Doris loved her family especially her grandchildren and kept close ties with her extended family.
