Marcella B. Christensen, age 96, of Toledo passed away peacefully, Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 9 from 5 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Marcella was born on October 28, 1914 in Dows, Iowa the daughter of Benjamin and Cora (Bray) Spears. She was raised and educated in Garwin and later moved to Toledo. She was united in marriage to Leo Christensen on September 19, 1940 in Grundy Center. Leo and Marcella farmed northeast of Toledo for forty-three years until moving to Toledo in 1983. Marcella attended the Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo and was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Toledo Mother’s Club, and the Red Hat Go-Getters at Carrington Place. She enjoyed gardening, baking (especially pies), and taking family vacations.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Leo on March 9, 1985; one sister, Catherine Sanders; and one brother, Clifton Spears. Survivors include one son, Martin (Laura) Christensen of Toledo; two daughters, Harriet (Alan) Tomlinson of Gilman and Ruth Christensen of Hiawatha; two grandchildren, Lisa Tomlinson of Holland, MI and Andrew Christensen of Toledo; one sister, Betty Davis of Dallas, TX; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice.
