Rev. Burrell Pennings, age 84, of Zeeland, Michigan passed away Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids after a long illness. He was born in Hudson, New York on May 19, 1927. He graduated from Hope College in 1950, from Western Theological Seminary in 1956 and ordained in the Reformed Church in America. He received his Doctorate in Ministry from United Theological Seminary, St. Paul, MN, in 1985. Burrell served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946. He taught at Meiji Gakuin University in Japan from 1950-1953, and served churches in Indianapolis, Ind., Lincoln, Neb., Des Moines, Iowa, Clara City, Minn., Alexander, Iowa and North Haledon, NJ. During his retirement he served as Pastor of Visitation at First Reformed Church of Zeeland, and started the Sunday evening service at Royal Park Place. Burrell was an active member of HASP of Holland, an avid reader, multi-lingual, and was always ready with a joke or memorized poem for any occasion.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norine; his children, Beth of Moorhead, Minn., Tim of Holland, and Daniel of Xi'an, China; his brother, Dale (Christine) of Scotia, NY; sister-inlaw, Wanda Hendrickson of Grandville; four nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, at First Reformed Church of Zeeland, 148 E. Central Ave., with Reverends Scott Van Oostendorp and Howard Davis officiating. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland. Interment will be at Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial gifts may be given to Western Theological Seminary or Reformed Church Missions (designated to Japan Disaster Relief).
