First Christian Reformed Church, Sioux Falls, SDRodney was born on August 6, 1973 to Roger and Lois Lamfers of Kanawha, IA. He spent his entire youth in Kanawha. Growing up his family were members at Wright Christian Reformed Church of rural Kanawha. Rodney attended Kanawha Christian School for grades K-8 and then attended West Hancock High School. Some of his fondest childhood memories include Sunday afternoons playing together with his parents and brothers, Randy and Ronald, and the annual family fishing trips. Rodney then attended Dordt College and graduated in 1995 with a degree in Accounting and Business Administration. There he met his lifetime love, Kerry Bolkema. One week after their college graduation, May 20, 1995, they were united in marriage in Sheldon, IA and recently celebrated 16 years of marriage. They established their home in Sioux Falls, SD and Rodney began his accounting career and remained with the same firm throughout his career which is now named, Lamfers & Maas, LLP.
Rodney and Kerry welcomed three beautiful daughters into their family; Ashley (12), Emma (11) and Claire (7). Rodney loved God and all his girls. While Rodney enjoyed his work and career, his greatest joys in life were activities together as a family and family vacations. His favorite vacations include trips to the Black Hills, New York, and most recently a family trip to Florida. Rodney’s other hobbies included fishing, playing in the church softball league, coaching his girls’ sports teams and golfing.
Rodney was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) in August 2009. He courageously battled the disease undergoing a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor in December of 2009. He was in remission for one wonderful year in which he enjoyed each precious day. His relapse occurred in January of 2011 and again he courageously accepted God’s plan for his life.
Rodney was an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he used his talents to serve as chairman of the deacons, a member of the Finance Committee, in small group ministry and singing in choir and in a men’s quartet. He served as a member and treasurer of the board at Sioux Falls Christian Schools and as the treasurer of the board at the Furniture Mission of SD. His family co-founded the Compassion in Action Fund in 2010 to help other families going through similar struggles with blood cancers or undergoing a bone marrow transplant. Rodney and his family have been blessed by the thousands that have prayed for our family, supported us and followed our journey on caring bridge. We also wish to thank the Avera staff that cared for Rodney over the past 2 years.
Even though our time on earth was short, we will cherish a lifetime of wonderful memories and a legacy of love. Grateful for having shared their lives with Rodney are his wife, Kerry and three beautiful daughters, Ashley, Emma and Claire; his parents, Roger and Lois Lamfers, Kanawha, IA; his parents-in-law, Harlan and Yvonne Bolkema, Sheldon, IA ; his grandmother, Nina Bolkema, Sheldon, IA; two brothers, Randy Lamfers, his wife, Rachel and their children, Ethan and Noah, Sioux Falls, Ronald Lamfers, his wife, Renee and their children, Ty and Tate, Polk City, IA; a brother-in-law, Brian Bolkema, his wife, Katherine and their children, Mikayla and Caden, Prospect Park, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Lisa Tintle, her husband, Nathan and their children, Dorian and Levi, Sioux Center, IA, Heidi De Kruyf, her husband, Ryan and their children, Aniah and Eden, Sioux Center, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
