S. M. Hines died at his home, 615 West Ninth avenue, Stillwater, Oklahoma, at 3:40 o'clock p. m., February 4, 1929, aged 88 years, 11 months and 12 days. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Odd Fellows were in charge of burial ceremonies in Fair Lawn cemetery. The American Legion will furnish pall Bearers. In the passing of this venerable citizen, Stillwater loses one who in his time played many parts, and officer, a soldier, an active Christian a pioneer of three states, he was modestly conspicuous. for more than sixty years he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Shadrick M. Hines was born Feb. 21, 1840, in Pickaway county, Ohio. He was the eldest son of the Rev. Eli and Rebecca (Cole) Hines. In 1851 the family moved to near Fort Madison, Iowa, later moving to Richmond, Washington County, Iowa. Mr. Hines was married November 14, 1866 to Miss Margaret Jane Nott. Of their five children, one, Frank L. died at Yates Center, Kan., December 16, 1927. Mrs. Hines died at Chochote, Okla., Oct. 4, 1905. Mr. Hines was a member of Troop F. First Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, serving under General Fremont; was in the body guard of General Pope an dispatch bearer for general Hunter. He served also under Generals Custer and Steele. In his service in the civil war he participated in thirteen battles and skirmishes. He was one of the few surviving members of the G. A. R. in Stillwater, and in 1911 was senior vice-commander of the Oklahoma department. In civic life the decedent served ten years as town clerk and six years as trustee in Wright county, Iowa. More than twenty years ago he was a member of the city council in Stillwater. He was a member of Stillwater Encampment No. 31, I. O. O. F., and also a member of the subordinate lodge, No. 14.
Of the four Hines children, John O., of Hubbard, Ia.; Mary E. Jones, Angle M. Buck and Charles W., of Stillwater, all were with their father when he died. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
