Bernard W. Blackman, son Warren and Almeda (Wood) Blackman was born May 21, 1915 in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Bernard grew up and attended school in Eagle Grove, Iowa. As a young boy, he became and Eagle Scout after the encouragement and guidance of a Methodist scout leader. Bernard had a consuming interest in all sports and upon his graduation he participated in basketball and football in college, attending West Mar where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Teaching. He later went on to earn a Master of Science degree at Drake University. Bernard entered the U.S. Army in 1942. While serving his country, Bernard attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. His tour of duty included the HQ and HQ Battery of the 89th Division Artillery under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1942 until 1946.

On May 30, 1941 Bernard was united in marriage to Frances Ann LaGrange in Nemaha, Iowa. Bernard and Frances have shared over 62 years of marriage together and three children: Mark, Paul and Linda. Bernard was a member of the Longville Community Church in Longville, Minnesota. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. Bernard enjoyed teaching golf during his 27 years of retirement. Bernard departed this life Thursday morning March 25, 2004 at his daughters residence in St. Robert, Missouri at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 5 days.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Frances of the home; two sons: Mark Francis Blackman of Lansing, Iowa and Paul David Blackman and his wife, Diane of Blaine, Minnesota; one daughter: Linda Lou Blackman of St. Robert, Missouri; three grandchildren: Stephanie Kay Schleiss and her husband, David, Lindsay Nicole Laurich and her husband, Chad, and Katie Louise Blackman; two nieces: Patricia Irelan and Joan Koenig and her husband, Joost; sister-in-law: Vera Blackman and her son Dr. James Blackman and wife Patti; sister-in-law: Eunice and her two sons: Warren and Keith; sister-in-law: Iris Halverson and her two sons: Frank and his wife, Brenda, David and his wife, Sheryl and one daughter: Ann Stinson and her husband, James; several other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Warren and Almeda; one sister: Dr. Evelyn; and four brothers: Everett, Russell, Warren and Gerald.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Saturday, April 3, 2004 in the Longville Community Church with Pastor Duane Brown officiating. The songs "Ill Fly Away, "When Morning Has Broken and "On Eagles Wings were played. The flag was presented by the VFW Post 772 and a presentation was made by the Eastern Star #241 Clover Chapter. Arrangements were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.
