September 10, 1913 -- September 14, 1944

Died in World War II

Again has the New Richland community been called upon to mourn one of its young men fallen in battle on foreign soil. This time it is Pfc. George Ganiere, son of Henry Ganiere of Byron township, who fell in action in Italy where he had been fighting for a long time. The customary telegram of notification and condolence was received Wednesday afternoon from Adjt. General Ulio. He was killed in action, September 14. George was 28 years of age and was born at Woolstock, Iowa. He has two brothers in the services, Charley, who is in Newfoundland, and Roger at Camp Wolters, Texas. He had served nearly four years, being among the first from New Richland to enter the service. It is a rather strange situation that his father, Henry Ganiere, while in the old country served three years in the German army. Henry, however, is a full-blooded Frenchman, an Alsatian, who served by compulsion and has no time for the German government. An obituary of George will appear next week.
