Grace Arlene Nelson was born May 10, 1926, at Renwick, Iowa, to John and Anna (Elmer) Baumgartner. She graduated from Vernon Consolidated School in Renwick and completed the secretarial course at AIB College in Des Moines. She worked at the State House in Des Moines and was married to Robert Nelson on July 29, 1945, in Renwick. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Renwick and Grace worked a short time at Sankey Implement in Renwick. Beginning in 1966, she worked at Renwick Savings Bank until her retirement in the mid 1980's. Bob and Grace continued living on the farm until 2000, when they moved into Goldfield. Bob and Grace enjoyed many winters in Green Valley, Arizona.

Grace enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, baking, attending garage sales and playing cards. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Renwick, the United Methodist Women, was a Sunday school teacher, member of the Hi Neighbor Club, the Legion Auxiliary, several bridge and 500 clubs, the Oak Ridge Women's Club and the Cosmopolitan Club. She also enjoyed many years as a girls 4-H leader in the Renwick area.

Grace became a resident of the Careage of Clarion in May, 2010, and died there on Friday night, February 25, 2011, at the age of 84.

Survivors include her sons, Bruce and wife Cyndie of Glendale, Arizona and Larry and wife MaryJo of Woodward, Iowa as well as four grandchildren, Bruce Nelson and wife Jennifer, Kristine Andersen, Michelle and husband Eric Schlichte, and Katherine and husband Mike Zwanziger. Also surviving is sister Marianne Werling of Park Rapids, Minnesota. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob in 2009, and a grandson Robert Nelson.
