Chassell, Michigan -- Esther M. Intermill, 100, a well known resident of Half Moon Beach, Chassell, died peacefully Saturday December 20, 2008, at the Portage Hospital in Hancock where she had been a patient for the past two days. She was born on November 29, 1908, in Humboldt County, Iowa the eldest child of the late Rasmus and Eva (Sampson) Friesth. Esther graduated from Humboldt High School and Iowa State University where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Esther was awarded the Payne Fellowship in 1933 and studied in Washington D.C. for one year. On December 19, 1934, she was united in marriage to Webster “Swede” Intermill in Humboldt County, Iowa, and after 59 years together he preceded her in death on February 15, 1994. Mrs. Intermill had also resided in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Laona, Wisconsin, and Alexandria, LA, before moving to Houghton, Michigan in 1946. In 1957, she moved with her husband to Chassell, Michigan and has made her home there since that time. Esther was a teacher at Elkhart, Iowa and Chassell High School teaching Home Economics. Mrs. Intermill was formerly a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Houghton and presently was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell. She enjoyed playing bridge, crafts especially sewing, painting, knitting and weaving. She also enjoyed following the Michigan Tech Basketball teams. Throughout Esther’s life she was active in many local civic organizations including the Houghton-Portage Township School Board, Goodwill Farm Board, 4-H and Girl Scouts, AAUW, Brulewood Weavers, Hancock Home Study Club, the PEO Sisterhood, Chassell Women’s Club and the Miscowaubik Club.
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, and two sisters: Gladys Griffith and Marvyl Friesth. Surviving are her daughter Marvyl Ann and her husband Fritz Wilson of Chassell; Her grandchildren, Jan Lynn and her husband Robert Stack of Oswego, IL; Christian and his wife Beth Wilson of Gaylord, MI; Her great grandsons, Mitchell and Matthew Wilson, Jacob and Tyler Stack; Her sister-in-law: Naomi Intermill of Olmstead, OH; Numerous nieces and nephews;
Funeral services for Esther will be held 11 am Monday December 29, 2008, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell with Rev. Peter Gundersen to officiate. Spring burial will be held in the Chassell Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday December 28, 2008, from 4 to 8 pm at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell and on Monday from 10 am until time of services at the church. The family suggests that memorial may be given to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell, Grace United Methodist Church of Houghton, The Michigan Technological University Basketball program or to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Esther Intermill. The Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell has been assisting the family with the arrangements.
