Eugene Edward Hurd, long time resident of rural Alden/Popejoy, died peacefully November 2, 2010 at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls surrounded by his family. The son of William and Anna (Waltz) Hurd was born near Polson, MT on October 18, 1921, the youngest of nine children. The family moved to the Popejoy area when Gene was three. He graduated from Popejoy High School. Gene married Virginia Andersen in 1942. They went on to farm south of Popejoy together for the next 68 years. For many years Gene was involved in livestock production. He was on the Board at the Iowa State Swine Test Station in Ames and was honored by being named an Iowa Master Swine Producer in 1964. Gene enjoyed the outdoors and for many years fished and hunted with family and friends along the Iowa river near their farms. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing attending a number of their races.

Gene is survived by his wife, Virginia, three children, Leslie (Doris) of Popejoy, Bill (Colleen) of Huxley and Joanne (Bob) Williams of Waukee, ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Art, Louis, Lloyd, Roy and Donald, sisters Rachael, Doris and Vivian. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 5, at the St. Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa Falls. Visitation will be Thursday, November 4th at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls from 5 to 7 p.m.
