Then proceeded to the Air Force achieving the rank of sergeant and serving from 1951 to 1956. He married Charlene Daniel on March 24, 1957, in Humboldt, Iowa. He was employed by Council Oak store as a butcher in Humboldt and in 1958 they moved to Lake City, Iowa where he managed in a branch store for about two years before the college journey began at Iowa Central Community college in Fort Dodge and then on to Iowa City, where he finished up his chemical engineering degree in 1963. After graduation, he made his first career move to Hammond, Ind., as a chemical engineer with Swift Inc. in the agri-chem division. In 1965, he brought his wife back to Mason City, to begin his long-term career as a chemical engineer with Northwestern Cement Company (Holcim) until retiring in 1994. In 1969 they moved to Clear Lake, where they raised their two kids and have resided ever since.
