October 18, 1926 -- September 1, 2006

Richard Charles Stevens, 79, of Swea City, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2006, at the St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 5, at the First Baptist Church in Swea City. Pastor Van Davis officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Interment was held in the Swea Township Cemetery, Swea City.

Richard Charles Stevens, was born on October 18, 1926 in Clarion, the son of Ray and Esther (Hokinson) Stevens. On October 18, 1946, he was united in marriage to Wilma Dawson in Clarion. Several years after their marriage, the couple moved to Swea City where Richard was employed with the DEK Rural Electric Cooperative. From 1952 through 1954, Richard served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. After his Honorable Discharge from military service, Richard returned to the Swea City area where he drove truck for the Swea City Creamery and Farm Service. Later, he worked for various farmers in the Swea City and Ledyard areas. In 1984, the couple moved into Swea City and Richard starting working for the Farmers Co-op Elevator and continued to work there until his retirement. After retiring, Richard continued working part time for farmers in the area during planting and harvesting. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing, electric trains and gardening. Richard was an active member of the VFW Post in Swea City. He was also past VFW District Commander and was very active in the VFW Post 3388 in Estherville and the Military Order of the Cooties.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma of Swea City; children, Lynn Stevens and wife, Mary Lou of Olathe, Kansas, Joel Stevens and wife, Laurie of Swea City and Diann Gayer and husband, David of Spirit Lake; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Stevens and wife, Joyce of Clarion, Fred Stevens and wife, Gerri of Ft. Meyers, Florida and Shirley Stevens and wife, Yvonne of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents.
