Francis Michael Besch was born February 11, 1940, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Matthew P. and Marcella Catherine (Fisch) Besch. He attended grade school in St. Benedict and graduated from LuVerne High School. After his schooling Francis served his country in the United States Army as a Military Policeman and Honor Guard stationed in Hawaii. After his honorable discharge from the Army he returned to LuVerne to resume farming and farmed until his retirement in 2006. On June 22, 1996, Francis was united in marriage to Betty Marrs Johnson at the LuVerne United Methodist Church. The couple renewed their vows on November 22, 1997, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Corwith. Francis enjoyed watching and following the Chicago Cubs, gardening, woodworking, fishing, traveling and looking forward to Christmas each year, as he was LuVerne's Santa Claus.

Francis died Sunday, May 6, 2007, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was 67. He is survived by his wife, Betty Johnson Besch of LuVerne; brother, Don Besch and wife Linda of Corwith; sisters, Virginia and husband Franklin Bode of Wesley; Catherine and husband James Dinesen of Leawood, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Peter Besch.
