Rev. Alphonse P. White, 85, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

Rev. White was born on March 5, 1912, in Worthington, son of Anton and Appolonia (Lehnhoff) White. He graduated from Loras with an AB, majoring in classics and philosophy. He was ordained on April 17, 1943, by the Most Rev. Francis J. Beckman. He was in seminary and studied theology at Mount St. Mary of the West, Norwood, Ohio. He served in the following parishes - St. Patrick's, Cedar Falls, from 1943-46; Immaculate Conception, Cedar Rapids, from 1946-53; St. Mary's, Corwith, from 1953-54; Immaculate Conception, Wexford, from 1954-57; St. Mary's, Colo, from 1957-61; St. Mary's, Roseville, from 1961-67; St. Benedict's, Decorah, from 1967-74; St. Patrick's, Anamosa, from 1974-77; and Immaculate Conception, Masonville, from 1977-86. He was the Independence Deanery Council Moderator in August of 1985, and retired in Cedar Rapids in 1986.

Surviving are a brother-in-law, Richard Thier, of Dyersville; two sisters-in-law, Florence (Mrs. Anton) White, and Leona (Mrs. Bernard) White, both of Dyersville; special friends, Bob and Pat Jennings and family, of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Rev. Louis White, Anton White Jr., Bernard, Emil, Joseph and Andrew White; and three sisters, Mildred Thier, Dorothy Boyle, and Louis White.
