ROCKFORD, IL - George Russell Harlan, 97, of Rockford died at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, in Alpine Fireside Health Center. Born June 9, 1905, in Stuart, Iowa. Son of Wolber G. and Lillian Russell Harlan. He lived six years in Rockford at the Alpine Fireside Health Center, coming from Waterloo, Iowa, where he lived from 1960 to 1996. Previously lived, since married in Waverly, Iowa, Adel, Lisbon, Ames and Lakeview, Iowa Codell, Kan. Stewart, Iowa and Lenora, Kan. From 1928 through 1958, he taught school in Pomeroy, Iowa, Shell Rock, Iowa, Lenora, Codell, Lakeview, Lisbon, Indianola, Iowa, Corwith, Iowa and Waverly. Among other subjects, he taught math, shop, band, orchestra, mechanical drawing, agriculture, health and science. From 1945 to 1960 he sold real estate, farmed on two farms outside Waverly and built several houses. From about 1960 until the time he retired at age 91, he prepared tax returns for a living in Waterloo and managed rental property. George was a ham radio operator with the call sign of WBOQHH. Married Mary Jurina Christina Aden on June 25, 1930, in Odebolt, Iowa, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Edna (Harold) Blair. George and Mary were married for 68 years, before she died on Dec. 21, 1998. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a degree in engineering. He was a member of the Iowa State Alumni Association and Riverside Community Church. Survivors include two sons, Maurice (Natacha) Harlan of Summerville, S.C., and Eugene (Sharon) Harlan of Rockford daughter, Joyce (Russell) Kohel of College Station, Texas seven grandchildren, James, David and Kathryn Kohel, George (Paula) Harlan, Russell (Natasha) Harlan, Wendy (Mark Harlan) Helmer and Shawn (Sara) Harlan and three great-grandchildren, Dustin, Kristy and Jessica. Predeceased by his parents wife and five brothers.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 5, in Riverside Community Church, 6816 N. Second St., with the Rev. Dr. William Richard Kerr Sr., officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Riverside Community Church. Arrangements by Anderson-Long-Klontz Funeral Home, Ltd., 428 Park Ave.
