Gridley, Illinois -- Gustave E. "Gus" Punke, 91, of 22728 Gulf Ave., Clear Lake, Iowa, a Gridley resident, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1993) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center's east campus. His funeral was yesterday at Clear Lake United Methodist Church. Burial was in Lincoln Township Cemetery, rural Clear Lake. Mr. Punke was born June 19, 1902, in Gridley, a son of Gustave and Lucinda Peck Punke. He married Alma Davis June 10, 1934. She died in April 1991. Survivors include two sons, David Punke, Nevada, Iowa, and Joel Punke, Clear Lake; one brother, Theodore Punke, El Paso; and four grandchildren. Two brothers and five sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Punke moved to Corwith, Iowa, in 1929 to join his cousins in a farming business there. Later in 1929, he moved to Mason City, Iowa, and was employed by Standard Oil Co. Distribution Center until 1945. He and his wife had lived on a farm north of Clear Lake since 1945. He was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church and Verity Masonic Lodge. Mr. Punke also served as a school board member of Lincoln Township 7 School. He was an assistant 4-H leader for Lincoln Township; a member of the Farm Bureau; Clear Lake Shipping Association; Extension Council; Farmer's Home Administration Committee; U.S. Soil Conservation Committee; Farmer's Co-op Association Board; and North Iowa Fair Board. Memorials may be made to his church. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
