April 1, 1922 --- December 6, 1992

A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph John Gettig of Southeast Portland will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Ascension Catholic Church. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery. Mr. Gettig died of heart problems Sunday in his home at the age of 70. He was born April 1, 1922, in Corwith, Iowa. He served as a chief pharmacist's mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II and married Wilma Gettig on Dec. 18, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Gettig had lived in the Portland area since 1951. He worked as a self-employed building contractor, real estate agent and insurance salesman for many years. He retired about 1980. Survivors in addition to his wife include his son, Greg of Salem; daughter, Jolene Low of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters, Dorothy Reilly of Salina, Kan., and Katherine Walters of Iowa City, Iowa; and one grandson. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Oregon affiliate of the American Heart Association or to the Midland branch of the Multnomah County Library.
