CLEAR LAKE, IA -- Viola Mae Nodland, 87, of 2405 S. Third St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Oct. 14, 1996) at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. The family suggests memorials in her name.
Viola was born Feb. 5, 1909, in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of Lyman and Minnie (Hart) McCauley. At the age of five, she moved with her parents to Webster City, where she attended school. On July 25, 1955, she married Thomas Nodland in Canton, S.D. The couple farmed in the Rockwell area for three years, then in the Klemme area for 18 years. The couple moved to Clear Lake on May 1, 1978. Viola was a loving mother and wife who especially loved cooking for her family. She enjoyed her church and working with other women there. She was noted for her lefse making and cherished a trip she made to Norway. In addition to travel, she also liked music, gardening on the farm and quilting at her church. She would often give her quilts to family and friends. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and the Do Day Club.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas, of Clear Lake; a daughter, Bertha Takle and her husband, Charles, of Webster City; a son, Rodger Roberts Sr. and his wife, Sharlene, of Laurel; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
