MESERVEY, IA -- Engelard Steenhard, 80, of Meservey, died Thursday (Oct. 10, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church of Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be in Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Engelard Steenhard was born on June 19, 1916, near Chapin on the family farm, the son of Joe and Gesina (Dannen) Steenhard. He attended country school in the rural area outside of Chapin. Following school, he started farming for various people in the area, while farming and living with the Hemme Hemmes family. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Koenen on March 26, 1941, at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield. They made their home farming in the North Iowa area before settling north of Meservey where they farmed a total of 24 years. In 1967, they moved into Meservey and he started working for ACCO Seeds in Belmond before working for the Winnebago Industries in Forest City, retiring in 1981. Engelard enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, fishing and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Meservey; one daughter, Barbara Kropp and her husband, Jerry, of Garner; five sons, Vernon and his wife, Carol of Olathe, Kan.; Alan and his wife, Ann, of Mason City; Wayne and his wife, Donna, of Mason City; Warren and his wife, Dawn, of Mason City, and Mark and his wife, Debra, of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Julie Rains and her husband, Wes; Scott Steenhard; Brenda Anderson and her husband, Grant; Shelby Steenhard, and Haylee Steenhard; two great-grandchildren, Erica and Abby Rains; one sister, Florence Maise of Latimer; three brothers, Klaas Steenhard and his wife, Marjorie, of Belmond; John and his wife, Evelyn, of Mason City, and George and his wife, Merle, of Rockwell; and two sisters-in-law, Molly Steenhard of Hampton, and Isabel Steenhard of Waverly. He was preceded in death by his parents. one infant son, two grandchildren and two brothers.
