ALEXANDER, IA -- Hilda (Nelson) Blau, 97, formerly of Alexander, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 1996) at the Tompkins Memorial Health Center in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Union Cemetery in Humboldt. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond.

Hilda (Nelson) Blau, the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Mathison) Nelson was born Feb. 18, 1898, in Wilton Junction. As a small child, she moved with her parents to Humboldt County settling in the Bradgate area. She graduated from Bradgate High School and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school in Garner, Belmond and Alexander. She was united in marriage to George Blau on June 22, 1930, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and they established their home in Alexander. In 1934, she was appointed postmaster at Alexander, a position she held until retirement. During retirement, she and her husband wintered in Arizona. After her husband died in 1982, she continued to live in Alexander and spend her winters in Arizona. Following hip surgery in October of 1989, she became a resident of Tompkins Memorial Health Center, Friendship Haven, Fort Dodge, where she has been a resident for the past six years. Hilda is survived by many nieces and nephews.
