Mary Ruth Stutters Smith Farmer, 78, formerly of Clarion, Iowa passed away August 7, 2009 at the Plaza del Rio Care Center in Peoria, Arizona after a long illness.

Born to Elliott and Ruth Stutters on March 6, 1931 in Rochester, Minnesota, Mary grew up in Clarion, Iowa, graduating in 1949 from Clarion High School. After high school, she attended nursing school at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, graduating in 1950 to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. During her career, she worked for the Clarion Hospital and Clarion’s Heritage Home (now the Careage Center), The Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Albert Lea, Minnesota and the private practice of Paul Papoff, M.D., Peoria, AZ. In her retirement, she also worked as a receptionist at the Baptist Village Care Center.

On December 28, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to Warren Smith of Eagle Grove, Iowa, to which they were blessed with three sons: James Warren, Thomas Elliott and Seven Michael. Warren passed away in 1963.

On December 30, 1980, Mary married Eugene Leonard Farmer of Albert Lea, Minnesota. They resided in Albert Lea until moving to Sun City, Arizona in 1987. Eugene passed away in 2002.

Mary was a former member of the Clarion Congregational Church, an active member of St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Sun City and was a 50-year plus member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Those left to celebrate her life are her sons, Thomas Smith and Cindy of Snohomish, Washington, Steven Smith of Los Angeles, California, sister-in-law Rusty Stutters of Clarion, brother-in-law, Richard Slaikeu of Eagle Grove, Iowa, three granddaughters and a great grandson.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands: Warren Smith and Eugene Farmer, her son, James Warren and her brothers: James (in infancy) and Homer “Bud” Stutters of Clarion.

Inurnment was at the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.
