ALEXANDER — Clarence Gust Vestweber, 87, of Alexander, died Friday (July 3, 1998) at Belmond Community Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Interment will be in the Alexander Cemetery, Alexander. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Clarence Gust Vestweber, son of William and Alvina (Thiese) Vestweber, was born on July 10, 1910, near Alexander, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy for four years from 1933 to 1937. On Oct. 4, 1937, Clarence married Mildred Loats at Estherville, Iowa. The couple went to California until Clarence was discharged from the Navy. They then moved back to Iowa and lived and worked on the farm near Alexander. In 1997, Clarence and Mildred celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Clarence was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond, where he served on many church boards. He was also on the board of directors for the Federal Land Bank.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Vestweber, of Alexander, Iowa; daughter, Diane Hanson and her husband, Roy, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; son, Dennis Vestweber and his wife, Deborah, of Alexander, Iowa; three grandchildren, Denise Nahnsen and her husband, Gary, of Urbandale, Iowa; Nancy Merrill and her husband, Brian, of Gulfport, Miss.; and Jason Vestweber, of Mankato, Minn.; and one great-grandson, Nicholas Merrill, of Gulfport, Miss. Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Kenneth Vestweber; one sister, Marie Bieber; and five brothers, Carl, Gust, William, Fred and Walter.
