Orren Ahrends, age 91, of Clarion, died Tuesday evening at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City after a four months siege of pneumonia. He was born July 13, 1873 near El Paso in Livingston County, Illinois. His father was Casper Ahrends, a native of Germany, and his mother was Sophia Menke of German born parents. His father died when he was 10 months old. He was baptized when an infant in a German Lutheran Church and when a young man, he joined a Methodist Church in Illinois. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Methodist Church in Clarion. Mr. Ahrends attended elementary schools and began farming at an early age. On April 28. 1897 he was married to Addie Francis Pool at her home near Chenoa, Ill., They farmed in that vicinity until 1903 when they moved to Iowa, coming to a farm they had purchased in Lincoln Township near Clarion. In 1942 they moved to Clarion where their home has been since that time. They were the parents of five children, Orville, who lives near Dows, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Little, and Mrs. Arthur (Irene) Clark of Humboldt, Mrs. Melvin (Addie Mae) Weld of near Clarion, and Orren Robert of Clarion and Ames. There are 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.

Mrs. Ahrends passed away two years ago, a few weeks after their 65th wedding anniversary. A year ago Mr. Ahrends suffered a broken hip from an accidental fall, from which he recovered satisfactorily. Since then he had spent much of the time in the Heritage Home in Clarion and in the Good Samaritan Home in Mason City. Services were held Friday afternoon, July 24 at two o'clock at the Methodist church with the Rev. Orlan Mitchell officiating. Burial was at Clarion Evergreen Cemetery with Eyler Funeral home in charge of arrangements.
