24 December 1838 -- 14 June 1930

Mrs. Robert Young

Janet (Stevenson) Young, daughter of John and Marian Stevenson, was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, Dec. 24, 1838. She emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1851, and in 1865 the family came to Iowa, locating in Crystal Township, Tama County. In the year 1868 she was married to Robert Young, eldest son of Samuel and Janet Young, and the new home was established in Perry Township near what later became the town of Traer. In after years the family lived in Traer until Mr. Young's death in 1916. Mrs. Young kept the home for a time but finally closed it and spent her later years with her children, Mr. J. W. Young and Mrs. Jas. McGowan of Goldfield. She had spent four happy years with her daughter, Mrs. McGowan, where she was lovingly and tenderly cared for, and only last October when her daughter's death occurred, did she plan to resume her home at her son's near Traer. She had been there but short time when the end came.

She was the mother of eight children, five of whom, two sons and three daughters, have preceded her in death. The living are: J. W. Young on the old home near Traer, Jane in the hospital at Independence and Mary, Mrs. S. K. Dalziel, of Traer. There are also fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is survived by three brothers, William, Hugh and Robert Stevenson of Traer. Mrs. Young early gave her heart to the Saviour and united with the church of which she was a faithful and conscientious member all of her life. She was one of the early members of the Traer U. P. church and was faithful in her attendance and interest as long as she was physically able. When her health failed and she could no longer attend the church services she kept in very close touch with all of its activities. She was well-read, broad minded and being possessed with an exceptionally good memory, she was one of the most interesting and lovable ladies of the community. She loved her home and her family and was devoted to them, and her many kindnesses extended' beyond her home circle. Brave pioneers such as she, have been a great blessing to any community, and their lives and influence will be felt for many years to come.

She peacefully passed away Saturday morning June 14, 1930, at her old home, aged 91 years, 5 months and 20 days.
