Mildred Elizabeth Hoveland, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Warner) Thiemann, was born on March 24, 1916, in Klemme. "Millie" or "Sue," as she was fondly known by many of her family and friends, graduated in 1934 from Klemme High School. On Oct. 1, 1942, Mildred was united in marriage to Arnold Emil Hoveland in New London, Conn. Following Arnold's discharge from the service, the couple relocated to Mason City in 1943, where Mildred had since resided. They became the proud parents of two sons and two daughters. Mildred was employed as a seamstress for 17 years at Mason City Tent & Awning. She was also active within her church and community as a devoted member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, the Miriam Circle, the Altar Guild and DAV Auxiliary. Some of Millie's interests and hobbies included playing the piano, tending to her yard and flower gardens, playing cards, especially "500," quilting, knitting and crocheting. She was an avid golfer at many of the area courses. Millie's golfing "claim to fame" occurred in her early 80s on the Clear Lake Golf Course, when she shot a hole-in-one on Hole No. 1! Millie was a very upbeat, hard-working and energetic woman who immensely enjoyed the music of Lawrence Welk and staying in close contact with her children and their families. She treasured the occasions of welcoming and hosting family and friends into her home, especially during the holidays. Mildred will be dearly missed by her family and friends who have shared in her life.
She is survived by her three children, Richard "Rich" and Joan Hoveland of Waterloo, William "Bill" and Jan Hoveland of Sarona, Wis., and Susan "Sue" and Bob Hastings of Oro Valley, Ariz.; her son-in-law, Jack Finley of Homerglen, Ill.; her sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Lillian Thiemann of Clear Lake; her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, David Hoveland; Michael Hoveland; Amy and Rodrigo Ibanez and their children, Daniel and Jennifer; Michelle and Matt Waters and their children, Alex and Ellie; Cory Finley and Aaron Finley; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Preceding Mildred in death are her husband, Arnold E. Hoveland in August of 1988; her daughter, Gloria Finley in September of 2001; her parents, Herman and Minnie Thiemann; and her two brothers, Edwin and Alvin "Mac" Thiemann.
