GARNER, IA - Services for Kenneth Schlawin, 93, of Garner, who died Thursday, (March 30, 2006) at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Zion Evangelical Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. Tim Diehl as officiant. Burial will be in Concord Township in Garner. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.
Kenneth Louis Schlawin, the son of Reinhold and Esther (Greiman) Schlawin, was born Sept. 1, 1912, on a farm near Klemme. He attended the rural schools of Hancock County and then worked for various farmers in the Klemme area. In 1937, he began working as an Allis Chalmers mechanic and salesman for Garner Motor Sales Co., retiring July 14, 1978. On Oct. 4, 1939, he married Syble Bernice Webner at Peace Reformed Church south of Garner. They lived in Garner all of their married life. Due to ill health, Kenny moved to the Elkader Care Center to be near his son and daughter. Ken enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, hunting and fishing. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Reformed Church in Garner.
Survivors include his son, Robert Schlawin (Carrie) of Alexandria, Va., and their son, Robert Schlawin Jr., (Catherine) of Herndon, Va., and their two sons, Eric and Jack; a daughter, Judy Wellendorf of Elkader and her three children, Scott Wellendorf (Laura) of Cedar Falls and their two children, Alaina and Mason, MMC Steven Wellendorf (Madonna) of Yorktown, Va., and their children, Brandon and Allison, and Timothy Wellendorf (Heather) of Onalaska, Wis., and their two sons, Riley and Isaac; Jerry Schlawin (Kathryn) of Elkport and their two children, Carol Johnson (Greg) of Elgin and their children, Jarrett and Kenneth, Gary Schlawin (Eileen) of Elgin and their children, Dustin Pensel, Hunter and Carter; a daughter-in-law, Delawn Schlawin of Garner and her children, Kaitlin and Max; sisters-in-law, Nadine Schlawin of Forest City, Etta Lou Bier of Garner, Amy Webner of Mason City and Doris Palmer (Willard) of Holland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Syble, on May 26, 1995; his son, Ronald, April 5, 2002; his parents; and three brothers, Wayne, Glenn and Virgil. Cataldo Funeral Home.
