Bernadene Bartunek, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 10, 2002, in West Ridge Care Center after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Brosh Chapel, by the Rev. William B. Harnish. Burial: Czech National Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today at the chapel.

Survivors include her son, Richard C. Bartunek and wife Cherryl of Cedar Rapids; stepdaughter, Darlene J. Yanacek of Fairfax; grandchildren, Brian Bartunek and wife Jaime, Lisa Renze and husband Brian and Dave Yanacek; and great-grandchildren, Jacob Bartunek, Lindsey Yanacek and Jacob Yanacek. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, on Oct. 29, 1990.

Bernadene Lawhorn was born June 8, 1915, in Klemme, Iowa, the daughter of Cleo and Lydia (Frye) Lawhorn. She married Charles Bartunek on June 5, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In her earlier years, she worked at Woolworth's and in 1960 she joined her husband in business at Bartunek's Appliance on 16th Avenue. She was a longtime Sokol member. In her later years, she spent many enjoyable years traveling with her lifetime friend, Hedy Benesh. A memorial fund has been established in her name.
