OSAGE, IOWA - Harlan E. Gauger Sr., 73, of Osage, died Sunday, April 28, 1997, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Osage, with the Rev. Clark Christian officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.
Harlan was born in Klemme, Iowa, on Jan. 11, 1924, the son of the Rev. Albert W. and Grace (Josten) Gauger. He attended and received his education at schools in Holstein, Iowa, and Buffalo Center, Iowa. He graduated from Blewett High School, St. Louis, Mo., in 1942. Harlan served his first year internship at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, in 1947 and 1948. He attended St. Louis College of Mortuary Science, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1948 and 1949, and upon his graduation, he served his second year internship at McAuley & Son Funeral Home, Mason City, in 1949 and 1950. Harlan married Irene Goddard on March 12, 1950, at Charles City. He received his Iowa Embalmers License in 1951 and his Iowa Funeral Directors License in 1953. Harlan was employed as a funeral director in Lake Mills, Fort Dodge, Atlantic and Osage. He retired from Champion Funeral Home in 1980. He maintained his Iowa Funeral Directors License and continued to work part time at Champion Funeral Home until 1997, when ill health forced him to stop working. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osage, where he was an usher for several years. He also served on the Church Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board. Harlan was an Osage City Council member for seven years.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Gauger of Osage; two daughters, Nancy Chitwood and her husband, Weyman of Dahlonega, Georgia, and stepgrandchildren, Brett, Brenda, and Steve, and six stepgreat-grandchildren, all living in Texas; and Kathy Squier and her husband, James and two grandchildren, Jamie Dawn and Jason of St. Ansgar; three sons, Harlan "Gene" Gauger Jr. and his wife, Lee, and grandaughter, Jennifer of Jamestown, N.C., Mark and his wife, Kathleen and granddaughter, Amy of Forest City, and Gary and his wife, Theresa and granddaughters, Jessica and Emily of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, Stanley Gauger of Springfield, Mass; two half brothers, Dr. J. W. Gauger of Tucson, Arizona and Carlyle J. Gauger and his wife, Dorothy of Ames, Iowa; a half sister, Marie Frevert of Rudd; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. The Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.
