Cecil E. Silvey, 84, Dows, died January 1, 2001, at the Kavanaugh House in Des Moines due to complications from a fall and pneumonia. Funeral services were held January 6 at the Presbyterian Church in Dows with Rev. Tony Hershey officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery at Dows.

Cecil Elwood Silvey was born on October 7, 1916, in Smithgrove, KY, the son of Byrd Bishop and Daisy Queen (Lawrence) Silvey. At the age of three months, his family moved to Belmond where his father got a job working in the beet fields. Cecil was educated in the Rowan Public School. He farmed with his brothers for a few years and then hired himself out to help others farm in the Galt, Rowan and Dows area. He helped Merle Poolman for a number of years. Cecil married (Virginia) Donnabelle Judson on October 1, 1940 at the Presbyterian Parsonage. They moved to Dows in 1968 after Cecil retired from farming. He also worked for Starner Trowbridge Tiling and Bill Weidemann Construction. He volunteered at the Blacksmith Shop in Dows and loved to garden. Cecil was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church. He entered USA Health Care of Urbandale in September and then moved to University Nursing and Rehab.

Cecil is survived by his children, Richard Silvey of Moorland, IA, Linda Buckner of Des Moines, and Kathy Hilpipre of Fulton, MO; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two sisters, Maxine Kielsmeier and Tinceoline Ziesman of Iowa Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donnabelle; and five brothers, Lawrence, Veachel, Reule, Elmer and Emory.
