Memorial Services For Galt Soldier Held Tuesday

Galt--Memorial services for Sgt. Glen Ivan Patterson were held Tuesday, March 7, at the Galt Congregational church, Rev. Ralph J. Beebe of the First Congregational church, Clarion, conducted services. Members of the Dows American Legion post attended services in a body. Mervin Cross, intimate friend of Glen's, spoke effectively about Glen's life. Earl Hill, commander of the Dows Legion post, told of Glen's army service and recognition he had received. Taps were sounded by Darrell Baines, a camp buddy of Glen's.

Sgt. Glen Ivan Patterson, son of George and Nannie Patterson, was born in Galt, August 21, 1919. He was the fifth child in a family of six children, five boys and one girl. He spent the great fraction of his life--more than twenty-one years--in Galt, attending the public schools and graduating from Galt high school on commencement day, 1938; and then working as opportunity afforded, particularly at the trucking business with Clifford Ballou. During all these years he was interested in the church school and in his young manhood he was a member of the "Young People's Bible Class" taught by Mrs. Melvin Tysdal. As he approached manhood he became a member of the Pilgrim Fellowship and was active in the work and worship of that organization. On the fourteenth of February 1941, he began his service with the United States army, going with the first group of selectees to represent Wright county. He received training at Fort Lewis, Wash, and Fort Ord, Calif., and then was sent overseas. In Africa he was engaged in active fighting. Later, he was in the thick of the Sicilian campaign and was wounded in battle July 1, 1943. For his bravery and faithfulness under fire at that time he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and the Purple Heart. After several months in the hospital, he was returned to his unit and he saw action again in Italy. There, in the most intense fighting of the campaign, he fell in battle, January 30, 1944.

Glen's mother preceded him in death by ten years, as she passed away January 20, 1934. His brother, Clayton, died at the age of six years in 1917. Thus, the father and only three brothers and a sister are left: Clive of Grundy Center; Pvt. George Patterson, Jr., of Camp Haan, Calif.; Mrs. Leo Green of Des Moines; and Boyd Patterson of Dows. Upon these brothers and sisters and the father this loss falls severely.
