J.B. WHITELEY SUMMONED BY DEATH

Civil War Veteran And Well Known Pioneer Passed Away At His Home Early Sunday Morning

After an illness of some duration with an affection of the heart, John B. Whiteley, the well known pioneer and Civil War veteran, passed to his reward at his home at the west city limits Sunday morning.

John Barrett Whiteley was born at Lottsville, Pa, April 16, 1838, making his age 80 years, 11 months and 14 days. Going from his native state to Illinois, he enlisted at the age of 24 in Company H, 92nd Illinois Infantry, August 9, 1862 and after nearly three years of service was honorably discharged on June 21, 1865. With his company he participated in all engagements of his regiment, except when detained by sickness, some of these being the most important of the war. He participated in Sherman's march to the sea, but on account of illness was out of the fighting for some time although later joining his company near Savanah, Georgia. After his discharge from military service and return to Pennsylvania, he was married on June 30, 1867, to Marian Comstock, the faithful wife who now survives him.

Some time after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Whiteley moved to Kansas and 32 years ago came to California, living in this immediate locality since that time. For twelve years they have lived in their pleasant little home near the west city limits, where their friends have always been welcome. The deceased was a member of McPherson Post No. 51, G.A.R. of this city and has ever taken an interest in the activities of the organization. Among his many friends, he was known as a man of honor and uprightness and among his immediate associates his hearty handshake and his kindly manner will be missed.

Besides his aged companion of many years he is survived by the following children: L.C. Whiteley of this city; J.E. Whiteley of Strathmore; Mrs. Blanche Williamson of Fowler; B.C. Whiteley of Vallejo; Mrs. Stella Kilmer of Guernsey; Mrs. Hattie Vincent of Tipton; Z.C. Whiteley of Sacramento and Mrs. Carrie Wills of Lemon Cove.

Attended by his fellow members of McPherson Post No. 51 G.A.R. and a large number of other friends, the obsequies of J.B. Whiteley the Civil War veteran and pioneer were held Tuesday at 2 o'clock from the chapel of the Peoples Undertaking Association. Rev. W.L. Dexter, pastor of the First Methodist Church, delivered an appropriate discourse at the chapel, and W.D. James sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Lead Kindly Light" with Mrs. W.D. James as accompanist. The internment was in Grangeville cemetery, and was under the auspices of McPherson Post. The following were pall bearers: W.R. Newport, George Weishar, D.H. Latimer, Wallace Collins, C.R. Watson and M.F. Baker.
