SPRINGFIELD, IL - John W. Walgren Sr., 88, of Springfield died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. He was born May 29, 1913, in Harcourt, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Bertha Wilson Walgren. He married Eunice E. Bronson in 1936; she preceded him in death in 1994. Also preceding him in death was a son, Floyd. Mr. Walgren graduated from Harcourt High School and Iowa State Teachers College. He earned a master's degree in industrial arts from Colorado State University in 1950. He was a lifetime educator, teaching industrial arts and coaching in Alexander, Iowa , and Northbrook. He later was a supervisor of industrial arts for the Department of Vocational Education, serving from 1952 until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, St. Paul's Lodge 500 AF&AM, Ansar Shrine, Shrine Clown Unit and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors: a son, John W. Jr. (wife, Nancy) Walgren of Elk Grove Village; a daughter, Gaynell W. (husband, Jim) Peters of Springfield; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel, Dr. John Hembruch officiating. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
