Fort Dodge Messenger, IowaHARCOURT, Iowa - Edwin E. Rieken, 85, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Ft. Dodge. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at the United Methodist Church, Harcourt, with Rev. Keith Putney officiating. Burial will be at Lost Grove Township Cemetery, near Harcourt, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Greenfield-Hartquist American Legion Post #699. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
Edwin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Julia of Harcourt; children, Brinda Griggs of Harcourt, Louella (Dick) Brown of Sheffield, Loretta (Harlan) Swanson of Dayton, Bruce (Kim) Rieken of Harcourt, and Rodney (Audrey) Rieken of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother Marvin (Loraine) Rieken of Walla Walla, WA; and brother-in-law Jack Mason of Harlingen, TX; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Sarah Black Rieken; 3 sisters; 2 brothers; and son-in-law David Griggs.
Edwin Eldon Rieken was born Nov. 17, 1924 at Chambers, NE. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School, with the Class of 1943. Edwin served in the United States Army during World War II, in the South Pacific Theatre, and was honorably discharged in 1946. On Oct. 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Julia Wood at Boone, and 5 children were born to this union. Edwin worked for Sears in Ft. Dodge for 25 years, until retiring in 1986. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and a 50-year member of the American Legion.
